The Boogaard Family vs. NHL

The New York Times has reported that Derek Boogaard’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the National Hockey League. The family claims that the NHL is responsible for the brain damage that Boogaard sustained during six seasons as an enforcer in the league, and for his addiction to prescription painkillers.

Boogaard was found dead of an accidental overdose on May 13, 2011.

“We are seeing a lot of cases nowadays regarding athletes and injuries related to the head,” says NYC personal injury attorney Alvin Broome of Alvin H. Broome and Associates.” There is intense media scrutiny nowadays on concussions in physically demanding sports such as football and hockey. It should be an interesting case. I think the Boogaard family has a chance, especially considering the fact that he was an enforcer, which translated to many fights and repeated blows to the head.”

The Derek Boogaard case is one that personal injury attorney’s in Manhattan are playing close attention to since he played for the popular New York Rangers. “When a young man dies, it is always taxing on the family and tough to witness from the outside,” exclaimed Broome. “My thoughts and prayers go out to the Boogaard family.
